Summary[edit]
DescriptionDestiny Church, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh - geograph.org.uk - 1558495.jpg |
English: Destiny Church, 52 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh. Destiny Church is a church in Edinburgh that began 10 years ago in a flat in the city centre. In August 2008 it opened a second worship centre in the city, a converted 700-seat cinema in Gorgie Road.
It opened in August 1913 as the Tivoli. Rebuilt and enlarged 1933–34 as the New Tivoli to designs by cinema architect James McKissack, reopened in January 1934, incorporating some of the fabric of the earlier Tivoli Cinema, in particular most of the facade, which was extended upwards and eastwards. Seating was for 1,200, and the plans included stage and dressing rooms. It closed as a cinema in July 1973, and from then until 2006 was a bingo hall. The 1933 sand-blasted art-deco window decorations are still visible on the exterior, and the interior retains most of its 1930s detailing. The building has been B-listed by Historic Scotland since 1993. |
