English: Design for a Stained Glass Window with a Swineherd. Pen and ink and brush, grey wash, over preliminary chalk drawing, 31.5 × 21 cm, Kunstmuseum Basel.
This is one of Holbein's earliest designs for stained glass windows, dating from the period when he lived and worked in Lucerne. At this time he used a richly varied wash, rather than the unifying washes of his later style. The design might be part of a series on the theme of the seasons or on the story of the Prodigal Son (Müller, 198). |
