Description
Deutsch: Im Rahmen des HRSC-Experiments auf der ESA-Mission Mars Express haben Wissenschaftler des DLR-Instituts für Planetenforschung die Übergangszone zwischen dem Äquator und dem nördlichen Wendekreis topographisch kartiert. Auf der Karte, die das Kartenblatt MC11 Ost enthält, wurde die Route eingezeichnet, die der "Marsianer" Mark Watney auf dem Mars zurücklegt. Bevor er sich von seinem Standpunkt in Chryse Planitia auf den Weg zur Ersatzrakete Ares 4 im Krater Schiaparelli aufmachen konnte, musste Watney allerdings erst ein intaktes Funkgerät organisieren, das er an der mehrere hundert Kilometer weiter südlich gelegenen Landestelle des ersten Marsrovers Soujourner der 1997 gelandeten Marsmission Pathfinder abmontieren konnte. Anschließend führte ihn sein Weg zur Mündung des Mawrth-Tals, das er talaufwärts entlangfuhr und dadurch etwa 2000 Meter an Höhe gewann. Anschließend fuhr Watney weitere 2500 Meter bergan durch das zerklüftete und von Kratern übersäte Meridiani Planum bis an den Rand des 450 Kilometer großen Kraters Schiaparelli, an dessen nordwestlichem Rand ein Bergrutsch die natürliche Rampe bildete, über die Watney in den fast 700 Meter tiefer gelegenen Krater zur Ares 4-Rakete gelangte.
