Summary[edit]

Description
English: Deed signed at Rehoboth, Massachusetts, 17 June 1661, between Captain Joshua Hobart, Lieut. John Smith, Sgt. John Leavitt and Nathaniel Baker of Hingham, Massachusetts, and representatives of the local Indian tribe. The deed, carrying the original marks of the Indian signatories, conveys a tract of land some fifteen miles square in the vicinity of Rehoboth to the four Hingham purchasers. The Indians who sold the land to the Hingham group of settlers included Alexander alias Womsittah, brother of Phillip alias Pommetoccome, chief sachem of the Wampanoag tribe. The deed was witnessed by Joseph Peck of Rehoboth, whose daughter Elizabeth married her cousin Capt. Samuel Mason of Stonington, Connecticut. Document is from the records of Suffolks deeds at Boston, Massachusetts.
