Description |
English: Armored sailing corvette MONTCALM originally built for the French Navy in 1865 .
Based on en:French ironclad Montcalm, the ship in this photo is probably misidentified: 20 or so years after the Montcalm was "condemned," and looking rather different from the model there. I contacted the University of Washington Libraries and they wrote back, "You’re right it certainly that it doesn’t look like the Montcalm. However, the identification comes from the corresponding nitrate negative sleeve which has written on it “Ship Montcalm in Seattle [with no date]”. Interestingly enough the Galbraith, Bacon and Company dock wasn’t constructed before 1900-1901, so if the ship was "condemned" in 1891, this can’t really be right. I’m going to change it to unidentified three-masted sailing vessel at the Galbraith, Bacon and Company dock. The general dates for the photo collection that it belongs to are between ca. 1901 and 1919, so maybe I’ll go with that." |
