Notes | Wooden boards. 2 pairs of clasps. 4 sets of cornerpieces and 4 sets of bosses. Macchi states; Bound 1550-1600, by Petrus Betz for Palatinate Friedrich III (1559-1576). H. Presser's publication, Einbände der Nachfolger Ottheinrichs in Mainz, reproduces the external (p. 338, n.1) and internal (p. 338, n.2) roll, to which the central panel-stamp (p. 336, n.1) has to be added, this last to be seen on A. Schmidt's, Zur Geschichte deutscher Buchbinder, pl. I, n. 4 too. His library was composed of theology and old authors books. Bindings were produced with calf leather and decorated accordingly to his forerunner Ottheinrich's bindings tradition: Friedrich III portrait on the upper cover, his coat-of-arms on the lower one. His covers were bound by Petrus Betz, from Augsburg, probably partner of Jörg Bernhardt from Görlitz (H. Presser, Unbekannte Ottheinrich-Einbände in Mainz, p. 281-290) who already worked for Ottheinheinc. Friedrich III covers are kept in: 1) Mainz, Library, 10 bindings (H. Presser, Einbände der Nachfolger Ottheinrichs in Mainz, p. 334); 2) Rome, Casanatense Library, 3 bindings (Biblioteca Casanatense, Roma, Legature antiche e di pregio, I, p. 270, n. 457; II, p. 119, pl. 186-187 on Sophocles, Commentatio explicationum omnium tragoediarum...cum exemplo duplicis conversionis Ioachimi Camerarii Pabepergensis..., Basilae, per Ioannem Oporinum, 1556, shelfmark r.xvi.16; Idem, I, p. 272, n. 461 on Jan Hus - Hieronymus pragensis, Historia et monumenta, partim annis superioribus pubblicata, partim nunc demum in lucem prolata et edita, cum scriptis et testimonjis multorum..., Noribergae, in Officina Ioannis Montani. et Ulrici Neuberi, 1557, shelfmark HH.X.36-37; Idem, I, p. 273, n. 462, II, p. 122, pl. 193-194 on Jean Calvin, Harmonia ex tribus Evangelistis composita, Mattheo, Marco & Luca, Roberti Stephani, 1555, shelfmark HH.X.5.; 3) Rome, Vatican Library, 1 binding (I. Schunke, Die Einbände der Palatina, p. 59, pl. XLVI, shelfmark Pal. III 152). | |||
