  • Prentenboek met een toy book-achtige sierrand op de voorkant met daarin de titel en een afbeelding van twee slapende kinderen in een cirkel. Bevat 5 paginagrote kleurenplaten en pagina's met in twee kolommen gedrukte tekst. Het verhaal gaat over twee kinderen van de ridder van Wallenstein, die door hun ouders worden toevertrouwd aan een oom. Deze wil hen laten vermoorden. Een van de ingehuurde schurken wil hen niet doden en vermoordt de ander. Na een lange nacht in het bos worden de kinderen gered. Bevat platen met een zwarte achtergrond, onder meer van enge mannen op paarden en een moordpartij. Bewerking van een oude ballade uit 1595: 'The babes in the wood', waarin de kinderen omkomen. Randolph Caldecott maakte er in 1879 een prentenboek van.
