Summary

[edit]
Description

Built in June 1918, this is a genuine WW1 aeroplane. Landed intact behind enemy lines 5th October 1918 due to either engine failure or Flak damage. Went on display at the Berlin Air Museum in 1936. The Museum suffered heavy damage in a November 1943 Air Raid, following which the remaining exhibits were evacuated to Poland. By 1963 the DH9 was at the Krakow Museum, although the wings had been lost during the Berlin evacuation and the fuselage was in a poor state. In 1968 the RAF Museum began negotiations to exchange the DH9 for a Spitfire. This finally took place in 1977 with Mk.XVI 'SM411' traveling to Krakow and the DH9 being brought back using the same vehicles. Once back in the UK at RAF Cardington, the immense task of restoration began. New wings were constructed and the completed masterpiece went on display in the Bomber Command Hall at Hendon in March 1983. In 2003 it moved to the Historic Main Hangars where it remains today and is the only surviving DH9A. RAF Museum, Hendon, London, UK.
