Summary[edit]

Description
English: The former parochial school of the Roman Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, 34 Stanislaus Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. A feast for the eyes, this three-story, multicolored, steel-reinforced brick building is a good example of architect Władysław Zawadzki's signature aesthetic, adapted here to a Neoclassical form rather than his trademark French Renaissance. Said Neoclassicism is on display most prominently at the twin entrances: recessed, round-arched, flanked with Tuscan pilasters and crowned in turn by prominent denticulated entablatures (matching that on the top of the building itself) and a stone belt course extending the full breadth of the building. Additionally, the central portion of the building is topped with a Classical pediment, there's a parapet along the roofline, and the upper-story windows are topped with decorative voussoirs. The school was built in 1915 to serve the children of the Transfiguration parish and was in operation until 1985, when its declining enrollment led it to be combined with a number of other East Side parish schools. The building is now home to Darul Hikmah, a bookstore associated with the Darul Uloom Al-Madania Islamic seminary on Sobieski Street, offering titles on Islamic teaching, history, economics, and the family.
