Title
Yang Guifei Dancing
Description

This illustration comes from the Yuan play "Tang Emperor Minghuang Listening to Rain on Firmiana Trees on an Autumn Night" (唐明皇秋夜梧桐雨), compiled in "Yuan Dynasty Plays" (元人雜劇選). It is based on Bai Juyi's (白居易) epic poem "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" (長恨歌), which tells the story of the emperor and his beloved concubine Lady Yang.

The play contains four acts, entitled respectively:

  • "Double Seven Celebrations at the Palace of Immortality" (長生殿慶七夕)
  • "Dance at the Pavilion of Scents" (沈香亭舞霓裳)
  • "Death of Lady Yang at Mawei Hill" (馬嵬坡楊貴妃之死)
  • "Emperor Minghuang Mourns Lady Yang on a Rainy Late Autumn Night" (唐明皇深秋雨夜奠楊貴妃等)

This print depicts a scene from the second act, as the beautiful Lady Yang dances elegantly. Her movements are graceful and her sleeves fluttering gently, the viewer thus also sharing in the beauty of this occasion.
