Notes
English: The mighty buffalo, representing strength and courage, is the symbol of high-ranking courtiers. They wore such buffalo masks at festive masquerades. Animal masks, including those of rams, crocodiles or birds, were part of almost every dance ensemble. Similar masks are still produced today and can be found in large numbers in the art trade.
