English: March is Women’s History month, and we want to highlight some of the amazing women here at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on our social media sites.

Female Conservation Hero or Mentor:
I consider Mamie Parker a person I admire and respect for the efforts she pushed during her time as the Regional Director of the Northeast. Her encouragement and wise words are always remembered on those busy days.

Where did you go to school?
I attended North Carolina Central University.


What did you study?
Biology

How did you get interested in conservation?
My father instilled my love for all things wild at a very young age. We often explored the woods in our back yard or went fishing in the local creeks, ponds, and lakes! My favorite times as a youngster were spent either up a tree or in a creek catching frogs and crayfish.

What’s your favorite species and why?

My favorite species is the cardinal. It was the easiest bird to identify as a child and it also happened to be the State Bird of North Carolina, my home. The bright red color of the male seems to brighten my day whenever I happen upon one.
