Summary[edit]
DescriptionDabotap at Bulguksa2006.jpg |
English: The Bulguksa Dabotap here in Gyeongju, is a stone pagoda, which was erected during the unified Silla period and differs substantially from other pagodas in terms of structure. This 10.4 metre tall pagoda's official name is “Dabo Yeorae Sangju Jeungmyeongtap.” This name is derived from the Beophwagyeong (Saddharma-pundarika sutra) in whom Dabo Yeorae is always verifying the truth of Seokga Yeorae. The structure of this pagoda is not seen in other Buddhist countries. It was reportedly built in 751 during the 10th year of the Silla king Gyeongdeok. The pagoda has four stairways flanking the four sides of the pagoda’s base. Four square corner pillars set up on the corner stone for the base have the crossing stone pedestal supporting the stone roof. On top of the stairway, a stone lion sits on its hunch. There is a stone square railing on the roof. Eight bamboo shaped stone pillars support the octagonal shaped lotus stone which was carved with sixteen lotus petals. Above the stone lotus, eight stone pillars support the octagonal stone roof with the finial. This monument has been designated as National treasure No.20 by the South Korean government.
