From the 17th century to the middle of the 19th century, voyageurs ventured deep into the wilderness, seeking to become partners in the fur trade with the Amerindians, staying for months or even years. They would sometimes paddle thousands of kilometres, carrying canoes and goods on their backs, and facing terrible hardships, not the least of which were mosquitoes.

They would set out from Montreal, the hub of the fur trade for nearly two centuries, following the routes established by the Amerindians, and would cross most of the continent, always in search of furs. From Montreal, they would reach the Great Lakes region, their main destination, via the Ottawa and French rivers. From there, they continued their adventure westward, beyond the Rockies, heading northwest to Great Slave Lake (in the northern part of current-day Sackatchewan) and north to Hudson Bay. They also dotted the continent with trading posts, some of which became important Canadian cities.
