Summary[edit]

Description
English: Photograph of a simple rope model of a circular plectonemic DNA duplex. "Plectonemic" means a duplex whose strands are twisted together, and thus topologically locked together. The best-known example is the "traditional" Watson-Crick double-helix. In such a model, the strands cannot be separated without breaking one of both open. As shown in this illustration, any attempt to pull the intact strands apart results in a tangled knot. For the untwisted, i.e., "paranemic" model, see the file <DNA, strands unlocked (paranemic)>.
