Deutsch: Das Wappen wurde am 1. März 1923 durch das preußische Staatsministerium verliehen. Es zeigt die Symbole der ehemaligen Industriestadt; Schlägel und Eisen für den Bergbau. Es gab drei Bergwerke in der Stadt. Das geflügelte Rad steht für den Eisenbahnknotenpunkt Osterfeld (zeitweise größter Rangierbahnhof Europas). Die Farben rot und weiß symbolisieren die fühere Zugehörigkeit zu Westfalen.
English: The arms were granted on March 1, 1923. The city of Osterfeld developed around a large coal mine as well as a large railway yard, which is symbolised by the mining tools and the winged wheel.
