| Description |
English: One of the innumerable ghats flanking the mighty Ganges, and the foremost in importance amongst these, the Dashashwamedh Ghat is undoubtedly the busiest throughout the day. Dashashwamedh, as the ghat calls itself, comes from the name of a vedic sacrificial fire ritual or yagna(in Sanskrit), where the flesh of ten horses was dedicated to invoke victory by appeasing the fire God, Agni. This ghat reigns supreme in aesthetic appeal, and due to it's placement nearest to the famous Vishwanath Temple of Varanasi(or Kashi, as it was previously called). Evening arati or Sandhyarati of the Ganges at the ghat is a treat to the beholder. More so because it's witnessed from the hundred boats sailing on the Ganges itself! With well adorned shops with various spiritual products on display on and around the ghat, numerous boats for a joyride at nominal expense, earthen lamps for sale to worship the Ganges yourself, scenic background view to capture one's memories, shops selling mouthwatering delicacies and exquisite sarees of Varanasi on and around the ghat, this is truly a traveller's favourite! |
