| Description |
English: House at downtown lake corner of Freret & Short Streets, Carrollton, New Orleans, from 1919. Street address 7919 Freret. Designed by Edward Sporl for banana magnate Salvadore D’Antoni, a co-founder of the United Fruit. Sometimes called the D’Antoni House. Although "Arts & Crafts" style was locally popular in the era, this is a rare example of "Prairie School" residential architecture in Louisiana (even though Louisiana has prairies...).
Owner recently applied to demolish it, which preservationists and the neighborhood does not approve of. It is on what has become an unusually large lot for this part of town, at least 3 or 4 houses would more commonly fill such space. |
