The F 6 (1892 Model) Engineers Brake Valve The engineers brake valve is the device on the en-gine by means of which the engineer is enabled tocharge up, and keep charged, the trainpipe and auxil-iaries; apply the brakes, and keep them applied, re-lease the brakes and keep them released, and to dothese several things he has either to place the mainreservoir in communication with the trainpipe, or open the trainpipe to the atmosphere, or shut off all com-munication, as the case may be, according to whetherhe is applying or releasing the brakes, keeping themset, or running along. Of course there are gas-kets, springs, packing rings, the equalizing reservoir,etc., but they are matters of detail. There are five positions in which the handle of thebrake valve can be placed. The first, or extreme left position is * full release/*and is the position the handle should always be inwhen releasing brakes, or when it becomes necessaryto charge up quickly, for in this position the air fromthe main reservoir flows through the largest ports inthe rotary, direct to the trainpipe. The second position is called running position/*because the handle should be carried in this positionwhile running along, for the reason that in this posi-tion the rotary valve is placed so that all the air thatpasses from the main reservoir into the trainpipe mustgo through the feed valve attachment, and this at-ta
