otch, just as soon as the trainpipe pressure hadexhausted below what was left in the supplementaryreservoir, the equalizing piston would again moveforward and cause the cut-off valve to again lap ex-haust port F. This action would continue in eachof the graduating notches, but when the handle ismoved to emergency position, the valve does notautomatically lap itself, for the reason that the equal-izing piston has then made its full stroke. Whenthe handle is in emergency position, Fig. 254, thelarge port in the main slide valve, marked J, is con-nected to the large exhaust port, marked K, whichcauses the trainpipe pressure to pass out through ex-haust passage C and be reduced suddenly, therebycausing all the triple valves on the train to assumethe emergency position. When the handle isthrown from emergency, service, or lap position, backto full release, the increase in the trainpipe pressure 598 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING drives the equalizing piston back. This action causes G E.V-98 \EV-90

Main Reservoir Tr&in Pipe Figure 253New York Engineers Brake Valve, Automatic Lap Position the vent valve 180, in the end of the piston 104A, toclose the bottom end of passage O, because in full AUTOMATIC AIR BRAKES 599 release, running, or positive lap position, the top endof port O is open to exhaust cavity C by way ofcavity P in the main slide valve. In order to get aclear idea of the purpose of each one of the severalports and cavities, the following brief summary of theirdifferent functions is here given. Port E in the slidevalve, and cavity M in the main slide valve are pri-marily used for the purpose of directing the mainreservo«Ljpressure through the excess pressure valveinto the trainpipe. Chamber E supplies trainpipepressure to the pump governor. Ports F and G in themain slide valve are trainpipe exhaust ports, for thepurpose of making a service application of the brakes.Ports J and K are primarily used for the purpose ofmaking an emergency application in connection wit
