It is claimed for this system that irregularities inlead are corrected for the shorter points of cut-off, andthe indicator diagrams shown in Figs. 96 and 97 cer-tainly show an excellent steam distribution for allpoints of cut-off. The author desires to say in this connection that hehas seen the originals of these diagrams as taken fromengine 1026 of the C. & N. W. Ry. and can vouch fortheir correctness. The following brief description of this valve is fur-nished by the inventor: 190 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING
Text Appearing After Image:
PISTON VALVES AND BALANCED VALVES 191 The Young valve and gear is an adaptation of theCorliss principle to suit requirements in locomotivepractice, and consists of two valves for each cylinder, operating alternately as inlet and outlet and driven bythe Corliss wrist motion, used in connection with theiStephenson link. An original device is provided forcorrecting the irregularities in lead, and either a con-jstant or a slightly increased steam lead for the shortercut-offs can be obtained, and an excessive preadmis-jsion of steam avoided. The exhaust lead, by thisdevice, is caused to increase as the cut-off is shortenedand permits an exhaust lap for long cut-offs, changingto exhaust clearance for a short cut-off, thus securing, the maximum of power while starting (as shown by the(straight back pressure line in the indicator cards) and) sufficiently late compression to prevent the terminalI pressure from exceeding the initial pressure even atvery high speeds, and this is accomplished with
