CRUISE OF THE PANDORA CHAPTER I. THE VOYAGE TO GREENLAND. On the 25th of June, everything being reported ready forsea, we slipped from the buoy off the Southampton Pier, andproceeded round to Portsmouth. We had already receivedon board two bags of letters for the Alert and Discovery,besides parcels, which had been forwarded in the hope of ourbeing able to deliver them, or deposit them at the entrance ofSmith Sound. On entering Portsmouth Harbour, a messagewas received from the Admiral to the effect that we mightgo alongside the dockyard, and we accordingly moored bythe Queens Steps at 9 p.m. I was much touched by thehearty sympathy which I received at Portsmouth. I hadendeavoured, from the commencement, to keep our cruisequite unnoticed, and had carefully avoided all demonstra-tions; but, as we passed out of Portsmouth harbour, thecrews of all Her Majestys ships gave us hearty cheers, towhich we responded in the best manner we could with ourlittle crew, and by dipping our colours.
