English: Whitlock the second or another tarnish of British Valor
Deutsch: Whitlock der Zweite, oder: Eine neue Trübung britischen Heldenmuts.
Das Blatt bezieht sich auf die Invasion der Franzosen unter Junot im Jahre 1808. Diese war zunächst erfolgreich, bis ein britisches Expeditionscorps von 13.000 Mann unter dem Befehl des britische Generals Arthur Wellesley, des spätere Herzog von Wellington, in Portugal landete und die Franzosen in der Schlacht von Vimeiro schlugen. In der Convention von Cintra wurde zwar festgelegt, daß die Franzosen Portugal zu verlassen hätten, überraschenderweise gestatteten die Briten ihnen jedoch die Mitnahme von "Privateigentum" und luden sie damit indirekt zur Plünderung ein. Das Blatt prangert die britische Nachgiebigkeit an und zeigt den französischen General Junot inmitten von Kirchenschätzen, während die drei vor ihm stehenden Briten sich in der Art von Besiegten vor ihm verbeugen. Der hinter einem Vorhang auftauchende portugiesische Offizier fragt: "Ist das englische Ehre, ist das englischer Heldenmut?" |
