Description

Cross-bedded sandstone in the Cretaceous of Kansas, USA.

The Dakota Sandstone and its correlatives are a widespread package of sandy siliciclastics deposited in the ancient Western Interior Seaway of North America. The unit dates to the late Early Cretaceous and early Late Cretaceous

Shown here is a small outcrop of sandstone "toadstools", or "mushrooms". This is a local term for differentially-weathered Dakota Sandstone rocks in Kansas (see especially Mushroom Rock State Park).

The tilted layers are cross-bedding, which forms in a one-directional current by wind or water.

Stratigraphy: Dakota Sandstone, Cretaceous

Locality: outcrop on grounds of east-bound rest stop along Interstate 70, far-northern Ellsworth County, central Kansas, USA (38° 51' 21.35" North latitude, 98° 07' 26.06" West longitude)
