Summary[edit]

Description
English: The church of St Stephen is located in the city centre of Kruševac. It was built in the 14th century within the walls of the new-built city by the Prince Lazar of Serbia (1373 - 1389). After the liberation of the Ottoman Turks in the 19th century, few amateur restorations were carried out. Thanks to the architect Pera J. Jovanović, the original appearance of the church was revived at the beginning of the 20th century. The church belongs to the first phase of the Moravian style. It has a trefoil ground-plane, and the three bays, with a dome over the middle. On the west side there is a narthex, which originally had a side aisle. Above the narthex there is a tower with a catechumen and a chapel on the first floor. The church was built in Byzantium style (built in alternate rows of cut stone and brick). The exterior is decorated with perforated rosettes and geometrical arabesque. It seems that the frescoes originally did not exist, and the church was for the first time painted in the period of 1737 - 1740 by the zograf Andra Andrejević and his associates. The wall painting is currently preserved only in fragments. The iconostasis dates back from 1844, and is probably the work of painter Živko Pavlović. It is fully preserved. Work on the restoration and conservation of architecture was carried out in 1989.
