Deutsch: "Nach H. Koegler (Jahresbericht der Öffentl. Kunstsammlung 1919 S. 37) haben sich beiden Pendant-Rundbilder vermutlich schon zu Holbeins Zeiten in Basel befunden, da Holbein das Lutherbildnis als Vorlage für einen Holzschnitt benutzt hat." [Friedländer, Rosenberg 1932]

Deutsch: Diese sogenannte Kapselbildnisse konnten als Döschen geschlossen werden. Aus Cranachs Werkstatt sind sie nur zwischen 1525 und 1527 bekannt. Das Paar des Kunstmuseums Basel ist vermutlich bei der Hochzeit Martin Luthers und der Katharina von Bora 1525 entstanden.
