Description: Image of Corporal Thomas Crossley, Co. E, 69th New York Volunteers, who had a gunshot fracture of the right femur after being wounded in the battle of Fort Steadman on March 25, 1865.

Caption reads: “War Department, Surgeon General’s Office, Army Medical Museum. Surgical Photograph, No 76. Prepared under the supervision of Assistant Surgeon George A. Otis, U.S.A. by order of the Surgeon General. ”

History is on reverse: "Surgeon General’s Office, Army Medical Museum. Photograph, No. 76.—United Gunshot Fracture of the Upper Third of the Right Femur. Corporal Thomas Crossley, E, 69th New York, was wounded March 25, 1865, in the assault on Fort Steadman, near Petersburg, by a musket ball, that fractured the upper third of the right femur. The patient was admitted to Armory Square Hospital, April 1st. He progressed very favorably, and by midsummer the fracture was firmly united with slight deformity, and only one inch shortening. The photograph was taken Jul 20th, and on July 25th, 1865, Crossley was discharged from service. Crossley was pensioned, and the examining board reported, September 11, 1873, that ‘ulcers appear near the entrance wound owing to necrosed bone.’ This pensioner was paid March 4, 1874. Photographed at the Army Medical Museum. By order of the Surgeon General: George A. Otis, Assistant Surgeon, U.S. A., Curator A.M.M.” Date: 25 July 1865
