Summary[edit]
DescriptionCovered cup, design by Hans Holbein the Younger.jpg |
English: Designed for a Covered Gold Cup. Pen and black ink over chalk, grey wash on paper, right-hand side offset, 25.1 × 16.4 cm, Kunstmuseum Basel.
This design for a gold cup is inscribed with the name of Hans of Antwerp, a goldsmith who attended Holbein at his death in 1543 and carried out the terms of his will. Hans of Antwerp worked for the English court in the 1530s and was associated with the Hanseatic merchant community in London. On top of the lid is the female figure of Truth, whom Holbein draws from three angles for the benefit of the goldsmith. As in other designs, he drew only one side of the cup: the other is offset by folding the paper and transferring the lines through pressure (Foister, p. 85). |
