Cortinarius semisanguineus ((Fr.) Gill.) Notes: Cortinarius semisanguineus Common name: Red-gilled Cort Approximate dimensions: Cap: 5 cm. wide Stalk: 4 cm. long, 1 cm. thick This mushroom was growing solitary on a decaying log in mixed forest (mainly oak, maple, birch, and pine). At first glance it appeared to be a small Gymnopilus sp., considering its substrate, cap color, and fibrous yellow stalk, with veil remnants stained rusty-brown from the spores. However, after flipping it over the deep red gills instantly distinguished it as Cortinarius semisanguineus. I apologize for the poor quality of the photos, they were taken at the very end of a long day of hunting. |
