Summary[edit]

Description

On 22 January 1852, 19 year old John Balmer became Wellington’s first and (to date) only victim of a fatal shark attack.

It was Wellington Anniversary Day, and Balmer went swimming in the harbour. He was a member of the 65th Regiment’s band, which had entertained the public earlier that day.

Balmer was bitten in the leg by a shark which was estimated to be at least 15 feet (4.6 metres) long. A boat came to his rescue but he died just minutes later.

A coroner's inquest was held at the Thistle Inn the following day. The coroner’s report pictured above states that Balmer died from “extensive lacerated wounds inflicted by a shark on the left thigh and leg while bathing in the harbour at Wellington.”

The shark had possibly followed whaling ships into the harbour. Several attempts were made to kill it after Balmer’s death, but all were unsuccessful.
