Summary[edit]
DescriptionCornerstone, Madison School, Zane Street and Broadway Street, Wheeling Island, Wheeling, WV.jpg |
English: Built in 1916, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Frederick F. Faris to serve as a public school for Wheeling Island. The oldest section of the current school was built as an addition to an older pair of buildings. The original Madison School, at the northwest corner of the current school grounds, was built in 1866 and expanded in 1872 with the addition of another wing, doubling the size of the building. In 1890, another building was added at the northeast corner of the school grounds. In 1920, following a fire that destroyed the original Madison School, the building was expanded with a three-story addition to the north, which houses an auditorium, as well as a two-story extension of the west wing of the building. The 1890 building stood until 1976, when it was demolished to make way for the present playground. The building features a buff brick exterior, a concrete base, one-over-one replacement windows, decorative patterned brickwork, brick piers flanking the window bays, gabled parapets, decorative trim surrounds at the south, east, and west entrances with terra cotta pediments, a hectastyle two-story front portico with ionic columns, a pediment, and a front entrance door with a decorative trim surround, and a three-story north wing with a rusticated brick base, decorative patterned brickwork, decorative cornices and belt coursing, and three main entrance doors on the west facade. The building is a contributing structure in the Wheeling Island Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The school was renovated in 2019-2020, modernizing the facilities within, and allowing the school to remain in use, serving the children of Wheeling Island and Downtown Wheeling. |
