Summary[edit]

Description
English: Cornelius Cardew, one of the most important post-war British avant-garde composers, lived in this modest terraced house at the time of his premature death. I hope, and I suspect the converse is true, that he wasn't responsible for installing the double glazing and porch extension into the bay. The use of red stock brick is interesting though.

Brian Cornelius McDonough Cardew was born in 1936 in Gloucestershire and was killed in a hit and run accident on the night of 12 - 13 December 1981 (Wikipedia gives the place as Leytonstone) outside Leyton Underground Station. His membership of extreme left-wing Marxist and Maoist revolutionary organisations gave rise to conspiracy theories concerning his death. A fuller article appears here and also HERE although 13th December has mutated into 31st December in the latter informative piece. The excellent blogger Crap Cycling and Walking in Waltham Forest has written about the incident here Who can say what happened if, as I suspect, there were no witnesses although Crap Cycling suspects no involvement by dirty tricks departments. One of his compositions was the Thälmann Variations, after the East Germany communist Ernst Thälmann, a collection of Maoist songs. His Bun No.1 was performed at the BBC London Promenade concerts on 20 August 2010.

Worthy of a blue plaque perhaps? Or a red one?
