Summary[edit]
DescriptionCorn drill at Burfa - geograph.org.uk - 900748.jpg |
English: Corn drill at Burfa Interesting farm relic, which has obviously seen better days. The main wheels are bent out of shape, but most of the mecanism is in place. The seed would have been placed in the large hopper at the top. The dispensing mechanism runs off a chain drive from the main axle via the gearbox (red). The seed would be taken (at an adjustable rate) from the bottom of the hopper via powered circular extractors with small compartments, then trickles down the flexible metal coil tubes (rather like the tube on today's shower hand sets) and into the soil via cast iron tips. The big problem was soil blocking the hole at the bottom and a tube filling up with unsewn seed, so most had a 'running board' at the back where an operator would keep an eye on things and also to shut off seed flow for turning at the end of the strip. I would guess that this machine was last used in the 1960s and it may have been converted from horse-drawn to tractor (by knocking the shafts together) in the early 1950s. |
