Title |
Copper-alloy Finger-ring with Seal Matrix Bezel |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy finger-ring with incised bezel for use as a seal matrix. The finger-ring band has an oval to sub-rectangular cross-section which forms a circular loop. With the seal matrix pointing upwards the loop has a vertical inner diameter of 20.96mm and outer vertical diameter of 25.98mm. The loop has a horizontal inner diameter of 20.60mm and horizontal outer diameter of 25.06mm. The band is 1.17mm thick and 0.98mm wide at the base of the loop opposite the bezel. The band then increases to a thickness of 2.18mm and width of 2.88mm at the three and nine o'clock positions. The band continues to increase in thickness and width to the top of the shoulders which are 4.31mm thick and 7.61mm wide. The oval bezel is 16.55mm long, 9.51mm wide and 3.74mm thick. The seal matrix consists of a 'W' with a crown above. The 'W' perhaps simply represents 'W' for William. Date is probably fifteenth to sixteenth century. See Cherry in Saunders ed. 1991.p.40. |
