Summary[edit]

Description
English: In Honduras, Copal incense is burnt by the Maya Chorti Indians, the Lenca Indians, and the Garífunas including those of Colon. This copal was probably made in Guatemala, but was sold in the market of Copan ruinas, Honduras, as the Maya Chortis of Honduras do not have enough forest lands to meet their needs of copal. The Honduran Maya Chortis form it into coins to burn it for ceremonias of which they maintain a signficant number. The Garífunas mix it with other herbs to keep away evil spirits for ceremonies and some times burn it alone to keep their houses smelling fresh. Copal is made of the resin of a tree. When Aztec King Moctezuma I attacked Honduras in the Post Classic period to make it pay tribute according to Fray Torquemada he wanted them to pay tribute in the form of Green stones, Green feathers, gold, cacao, animal skins, and resins which probably included liquidámbar, rubber, pine, balsalm, and copal. This copal is in the collection of the Burke Museum, University of Washington.
