Summary[edit]
DescriptionCooper Square Old & New.jpg | Old and new on Cooper Square in lower Manhattan, New York City. The 21-story Cooper Square Hotel (on the right) opened in 2008. The building in the background is Cooper Union's New Academic Building which opened in 2009. The building between, 35 Cooper Square (originally 391 Bowery), was owned in the early 1800s by Nicholas William Stuyvesant, great-grandson of Peter Stuyvesant. (source: Vanishing NY) As of february 2011,the fate of 35 Cooper Square is tenuous - it has been scheduled to be demolished, but preservationists are fighting to save it. The NYC Landmarks Preservations Committee turned down the request to landmark it because the exterior of the building has been altered. (Source: Walking Off the Big Apple) |
