Norris as thepermanent presiding officer of the meeting. I deem it a special privilege and distinguished honor,said the lieutenant governor, to perform the duties ofpermanent chairman on this occasion. It is a great honor toassist in dedicating this monument to one so distinguishedas Gen. Meagher. It is especially fitting that the commit-tee has chosen this dav for the unveiling of this statue. He was notnative born, but long before he had come to these shoresthe principles of self-government, freedom and the rightsof man had been born in him. Wherever there has been a meeting in the name oreanse of liberty .wherever a sword has been raised for free-dom, an Irishman has been found there. In erecting this monument to Gen. Meagher the thanksof the people of this State are due to the Meagher MemorialAssociation and to the Irishmen and citizens of this Statewho have assisted in the work. It is our duty to so shapeour lives that we will do honor to the principles for whichthis man fought. It is not necessary for us to draw thesword to follow the example of Meagher, but we can honorhis memory by hving up to the principles he fought for. This monument will serve as an inspiration to all thosewho come after him. Standing here at the entrance of ourState house, it will be a beacon light for tliose who servethe State, whether in the judicial, legislative or executivedepartments.
