A model of a Continental Airlines DC-10 in the 1968-1990 Saul Bass-designed Meatball livery. This particular example has the red Meatball, which was a 1985 revision. Above it can be seen an early version of the United Airlines shield. Both airlines were founded by Walter Varney; Varney Air Lines of 1926 was the oldest of the four airlines that came together in 1931 to become United Airlines, and Walter Varney went on to found Varney Speed Lines in 1935, which became Continental. With the merger of Continental and United in 2010, Varney's airlines are one again. To the right is an early symbol for American Airlines. Photo taken at Flight Path Museum at the south end of Los Angeles International Airport, covering the history of aviation, especially as it pertains to LAX. This photo is my 2,500th Flickr upload. |
