e of the brave, the gentle, the patriotic friendof freedom and humanity, Colonel Francis Vigo/ That the financial troubles which finallv came uponColonel Vigo grew out of his advances and credits to theAmerican army, and efforts to sustain the value of theAmerican paper money, which became worthless in hishands, there can be no doubt. He could not collect debts * On the Sth of June, 1872, congress referred the claim of the executors oiColonel Francis Vigo to the court of claims, with full jurisdiction and powerto act; and in 1S75 the court gave judgment on a hill of exchange drawn byGeorge Rogers Clark in favor of Vigo for army supplies, in the sum of $S.6i6of principal and $41,282.60 interest, being the interest, at 5 percent., from March20, 1779, to January iS, 1S75, making a total of $49,898.60. A forcible illustra-tion of the accumulative power of interest, as well as neglect of government topromptly settle claims. Acts 2d session 42d Cong., p. 49; Reports Court ofClaims, Vol. 10.

F COLONEL FRANCIS VIGO. 275 due him from the government in such money as would payhis debts—in fact, could not collect at all. As a result hebecame embarrassed, and, although he struggled along, byextensions and renewals, for some years, finally failed tomeet his obligations. On the opposite page is a fac-simileof a note, dated in 1785, on which he was sued. The memorandum on the lower corner of this note is inthe handwriting of the celebrated attorney of that periodand locality, John Rice Jones. He had, no doubt, used acopy of the note in bringing the suit. The attorney on theother side had demanded oyer (that is the production incourt) of the original note. It was produced and notedon the margin, Oyer givn 2id Mar. 1804. J. R. J.The legal profession would of course understand this with-out explanation.
