Summary

Description

Cong Abbey, County Mayo, Ireland

English: West face of the slype doorway (porch leading to a small passage, also called parlatorium, that allows to access the monastic cemetery) with two sets of triple shafts, as seen from the cloister, looking east. Created at the beginning of the 13th century in the transitional style of the School of the West with typical elements of the Irish Romanesque like the zig-zag chevrons. (See H. G. Leask, The Augustinian Abbey of St. Mary the Virgin, Cong, Co. Mayo., Journal of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, vol. 19, no. 3/4, 1941, pp. 107–117, JSTOR 25535211; Britta Kalkreuter, Boyle Abbey and the School of the West, p. 96–97.)
