Summary[edit]

Description
English: Composting facility at Codlaw Hill Farm, Acomb Fell. Launched in 2007, the green waste recycling initiative processes the contents of 7,000 brown wheelie bins in Tynedale District which are used to collect grass cuttings, hedge trimmings small branches, twigs, plants, flowers and weeds. After collection the green waste is taken to the farm where it is shredded, open air-wind-rowed and turned to help accelerate the break down process. This part of the process takes up to 10 weeks and the temperatures are monitored on a daily basis to make sure it achieves the Composting Association Standard, PAS100. Only after the standard has been achieved the material is screened to remove over-sized material and contamination, with the whole process taking up to 16 weeks. From the 1,000 tonnes of green waste collected each year, around 500 tonnes of compost are made, which is being sold to landscape gardeners. The farm is also planning to run a bagging service which will allow the compost to be sold locally.
