Summary[edit]
DescriptionCommando Memorial - geograph.org.uk - 147986.jpg |
English: Commando Memorial. The 17 foot high Memorial was designed by Scott Sutherland from Dundee College of Art in 1949, and unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1952. It commemorates all the commandos who were trained at the Commando Basic Training Centre in Achnacarry Castle from 1942 onwards. During training live ammunition was used to provide battle conditions as near to those they would meet in combat. Unfortunately this greatly increased the risks and sadly a number of trainees were killed during training. The Memorial commemorates the great many more who died in wars up to the present day. |
