On this day 6 September 1907 the Colonial Museum sought permission to capture two huia for release on Little Barrier Island. After permission was granted plans were made for a two week expedition into the rugged Ruahine ranges near Taihape in search of the elusive bird. However none were found and in 1908 local Maori who knew the area well said none had been seen since a “great raid” made on huia at the time of a visit of the Duke and Duchess of York. The connection between these events was not explained but it is possible the prized feathers of the huia were gifted to the Royal couple. Meanwhile cages had been established on another sanctuary of Kapiti Island to receive the huia but they were destined to remain empty. Another search in the Otaki area in 1911 revealed only one dead huia which had been shot and its tail feathers removed. While various settlers claimed to have seen huia, sometimes in large numbers, these sighting were discredited. There was a glimmer of hope when two huia were reportedly seen near Mt Holdsworth in the Wairarapa but they were not seen again.
