English: IWM caption : THE POLISH ARMY IN THE MIDDLE EAST, 1942-1943. Colonel Leopold Okulicki, the Commander of the 7th Infantry Division (Polish Army in the East), in conversation with the Polish Ambassador in Persia at the reception held after the game, 10 April 1943.
The football team of the Polish Army in the East became famous for winning many games. In Iran the team was composed almost exclusively of young men who had not reached an age to be able to play in big teams in Poland. Some of them fought in Tobruk and other parts of the Western Desrt. These pictures show a game between the Polish team and one representing Persia, which caused a great interest and drew large crowds. The final score was 3-1 for the Poles. |
