| Description |
English: Collecting turf at Crocknakeeferty. Also known as peat, it is burned in an open fire. Looks like some sort of machine has harvested this, but the traditional method is by turf spade and is less damaging on the environment. This may have been some sort of experiment to see how viable it is to get turf down from the mountain. Wholesale harvesting of the slopes could lead to an environmental disaster as the removal of the spongy grasses and heathers mean the rain is not absorbed and it will run off faster and lead to erosion. |
