Description |
Nederlands: Foto. De in juli 1883 in gebruik genomen ophaalbrug over het Waaigat werd destijds vernoemd naar Nicolaas van den Brandhof (1834-1904), van 18 oktober 1882 tot 6 mei 1890 gouverneur van Curaçao. In 1928 werd de brug - die de wijken Punda en Scharloo verbindt - vervangen door een betonnen exemplaar dat de naam van Koningin Wilhelmina kreeg.
De foto geeft een wijde blik over Willemstad. Ver op de achtergrond is de Heilige Rozenkranskerk te zien, die in 1958 de status van kathedraal zou krijgen. Het was de eerste door de Orde der Dominicanen gebouwde rooms-katholieke kerk op Curaçao. Naar verluid werd de eerste steen gelegd in 1876 en vond de inwijding plaats in 1882. We lijken iets over de datering te kunnen zeggen op basis van de signatuur 'Soublette et Fils Photographes' en het wapen van het Koninklijk Huis dat daarbij is afgedrukt. Vanaf 1906 mocht fotostudio 'Soublette et Fils' het predikaat hoffotograaf - inclusief het koninklijk wapen - voeren. Dat maakt een periode in de jaren 1906-1910 aannemelijk. Daarbij dienen we echter een slag om de arm te houden: er bestaat een vergelijkbare foto in de Tropenmuseum-collectie (60005676) die gedateerd is 1890-1895 (Schiltkamp 1999: foto 21). Het kan heel best dat deze foto inderdaad van eerdere datum is en later (na 1906) nog eens is afgedrukt. Rob Jongmans |
