Nederlands: Slaginstrument. Een tenor steel drum, of pan.
De steel pan is ontstaan tussen de jaren 1930 en 1940 in Trinidad. Er zijn geen exacte data bekend, maar hij is ontstaan in de sloppenwijken van Port of Spain, waar de trom onder Afrikaans-Trinidadiaanse jongens favoriet was. Vanaf de jaren 1950 werd de steel pan een erkend instrument voor alle rangen en standen van het gebied. De steel pan is onderdeel van de steel band die door het hele Caribische gebied gehoord kan worden. Hun meest prachtige vorm is echter in Trinidad te vinden. Een 'pan', wordt gemaakt door de bovenkant van een olievat af te halen. De lengte hangt af van het gewenste geluid. De vervaardiging en de geluiden die de pan kan produceren, zijn vrij persoonlijk; er is geen standaard tonatie. Ook zijn er daardoor vele verschillende soorten steel drums, met grote variatie in vorm en gebruik. De pans worden verdeeld naar gelang hun bereik en rol binnen de band. Ze worden bespeeld door met rubber bedekte slagstokken. Een veel geziene variant is de draagbare pan (pan-around-the-neck), waarbij de spelers in parades lopen, maar vaak ook worden de pans op standaarden geplaatst. Soms worden de bands gereden. Nationale bedrijven sponsoren vaak steel bands of organiseren competities. De pan is Trinidad's nationale instrument, en wordt op veel scholen geleerd, waardoor er veel goede spelers zijn. Tijdens de wedstrijden worden zowel klassieke, nieuwe en populaire liederen gespeeld. Zo zijn er virtuoze uitvoeringen van bijvoorbeeld Gershwin's Rapsody in Blue (Mc Daniel, in Olsen et. al. 1998:962). In formele competities moeten ook een eigen teststuk en een calypso gespeeld worden als proeve van bekwaamheid. De toekomst van de pan in Trinidad is van grote zorg en zorgt voor veel discussie onder de bevolking van Trinidad en Tobago (idem, 963). |
