| Description |
English: Colchester Castle This is the largest keep in existence, measuring 151 by 110ft. It belongs to the same type of 11th century keeps such as the White Tower at the Tower of London, These are often called hall keeps, that is buildings that are much broader than the more usual tower keeps and not quite so high in proportion. The keep was originally faced with septaria stone and tile, but this has disappeared over the years to expose the rubble core and many Roman bricks. Only the ground floor and one upper floor now exists but it originally had another floor, or perhaps another two, which were pulled down in 1683. The castle now houses Colchester's main museum. |
