Title
Coenwulf penny
Description
English: A hammered silver coin of early medieval date. Penny of Coenwulf of Mercia (796-821 AD). The coin is in good condition, with little wear or corrosion. The Portable Antiquities Scheme states this coin was minted by Wighard at London, although the Clywd–Powys Archaeological Trust believes the tribrach is supposed to represent the archiepiscopal pall thus giving the opinion that this coin was struck at Canterbury. The central letter may be a Greek ω as a variant of the usual Alpha and Omega insignia or may be an inverted overbar m representing Merciae ("[King] of Mercia") or Merciorum ("[King] of the Mercians") in a similar style with the Greek letter. North 342. Similar to BLS Cn 21. It measures 18.7mm diameter by 0.7mm thick and weighs 1.3g. EMC 2006.0123
