Kreuz und Prälatenhut über dem Schild lassen das Wappen als das eines Kirchenmannes erkennen. Dass es sich dabei um einen Bischof handelt, zeigen die grüne Farbe des Hutes sowie die sechs Quasten, die beidseitig am Hut hängen. Die drei Spitzen im oberen Teil des Wappenschildes sind ein Bestandteil des Wappens von Worms-Herrnsheim, dem Geburtsort des designierten Erfurter Bischofs Ulrich Neymeyr. Sie gehören zum Wappen der Dalberg-Familie, die ihren Sitz im Herrnsheimer Schloss hatte. Der hl. Ulrich, der Namenspatron des Bischofs, wird mit einem Fisch dargestellt. Zugleich ist der Fisch ein altes Symbol für Jesus Christus. Die griechischen Buchstaben des Wortes Fisch (Ichtys) stehen für Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn, Erlöser. Die beiden Fische in Kreuzform erinnern daran, dass Jesus Christus durch seinen Tod am Kreuz die Welt erlöst hat. Diese Heilsbotschaft klingt auch im Wahlspruch des Bischofs an, der sich unter dem Wap-penschild findet: "Christus suscepit nos - Christus hat uns angenommen". Das "Motto" des bischöflichen Dienstes von Ulrich Neymeyr ist einem Vers aus dem Römerbrief der Bibel entnommen (Röm 15,7), der dem Bischof schon als Priester viel bedeutet hat. Im kirchlichen Bereich gibt es Wappen seit dem 13. Jahrhundert, als Geistliche und geistliche Gemeinschaften begannen, sie als Eigentums- Herrschafts- und Hoheitszeichen zu benutzen. Die Wappen wurden im Siegel geführt sowie auf Denkmälern, in Kirchen und auf Geräten angebracht. Heute finden sich die Wappen von Bischöfen meist auf wichtigen Dokumenten und amtlichem Briefpapier.
